According to the latest definitions, a digital thread can be conceived as an integrated, connected, and transformable framework of data and functions that provides a comprehensive view of a system’s lifecycle. It must cover, from initial specification and design, through production, operation, and disposal. It connects data and functions from various sources, tools, and systems, enabling seamless information flow and online visibility into all system life dimensions. A significant portion of an enterprise’s intellectual property and possibly its unique value proposition lies implicitly (or explicitly) inside its digital threads. As system complexity grows and product development cycles shrink, managing an enterprise’s digital threads becomes critical to an organization’s success.
The consequence of such complicated environments, where diverse engineering tools ecosystems must be integrated to enable proper digital thread management, is that systems engineering interoperability becomes the silver bullet for success.
Indeed, a wise post states, "Systems Engineering rigor needs an Interoperability framework”. This framework can be conceptual or real, but the digital thread, MBSE, lifecycle management, and proper systems engineering have become dependent on Interoperability between and among information, processes, methods, and digital tools.
For this and many other reasons, Universidad Carlos III de Madrid, supported by INCOSE and CIMdata, and sponsored by The REUSE Company, is organizing the first Systems Engineering Interoperability Conference. The conference occurs from 13-14 November in Madrid (Spain).
